New York Fashion Week with EDAS

Fashion week has started and if it is one thing we all can agree with is the importance of dress. With New York being one of the fashion capitals, it is safe to say that the clothing industry is a forever evolving business and is only getting better. I had the privilege of attending a show first hand, seeing upcoming student designers such as Daniel Jennings, who has a couture aesthetic and Haley Hysong, a designer from a small town who plays with color and youth. The show lasted an hour long and had variety of music playing as the models strut down the runway. The crowd was watched in amusement as each designer's looks grace the stage.

There were five black models in the 35-look Calvin Klein show this afternoon. Five models is a significant number in a collection that in recent seasons has included only one or no black models, the most prominent example in New York of a general trend of whitewashing the runways.

The recent campaign for diversity has resulted in changes this season. They are small changes, and they are only a start. Many people watching online, for example, noticed there were no Asian models at the show.

They must start including people that look like this.

The collection itself, marking the 10th anniversary of Francisco Costa as the company’s women’s wear designer, was expansive in range, with a surprising amount of color and texture that still fit neatly within the label’s minimalist box. And there were major celebs: Nicole Kidman , Alexander Skarsgard and Julianne Moore.

Michael Kors show was captivating as well. It was cited by the New York Times as one of the designer to watch as fashion week moves to London, Milan and Paris.  His conservative-chic clothes, included navy blazers, cuffed denim shorts and belted full-skirted dresses.

Model Harley Viera-Newton (left), actress Kate Mara (center), and actress Katie Holmes (right) attended the Michael Kors fashion show at The Theatre at Lincoln Center on Sept. 11.

The experience was new for me and I can honestly say that I’d love to do more covers with upcoming shows. I am now more informed and appreciative of the craft of design. I recommend that all people have the opportunity to embark on fashion week experience, it is truly phenomenal.

I want to thank EDAS for making this literary contribution.
