I was able to speak with Ed after his interview with the USA Today about online gaming in Delaware. Since I had direct access, I started with a series of questions about the NFL Sports betting package that Dover Downs has for this season.
1). This is the 4th year of NFL parlay betting. What the impact been to this point?
The NFL parlay betting is doing okay. It is not what we envision when we invested money into remodeling and making a sportsbook. We wanted to offer single game wagering. Since we don't, we can't attract big gamblers or big bets.
2). If you had to gauge the success of Sports Betting from 1 - 10 , what number would you pick?
Two! LOL. We are making some changes in the wagers we are offering this fall. We will now have over and under on games, The total points that both teams combine will score. We will also offer a future bet that allows the players to pick who they think will win the Super Bowl. For example, the Eagles are 30 to 1 at this time. A series of events must occur to reflect a parlay.
3). This year, the Delaware Lottery has expanded the number of retail outlets and restaurants that can allow sports betting. Did the expansion affect you last year?
This year approximately 60 outlets thru out the state will offer sports betting. Last year with 30 outlets other than casinos in the market, the effect was minimal. Our numbers were the same and there was no negative impact.
4). New Jersey is pressing forward with Sports Betting. If they are successful, will you follow suit and open up to the other professional sports and NCAA?
I am rooting for them to be successful in there quest to have the Sports Betting ban overturned.
5).Online Gaming is the next frontier. For now, you are on Facebook. When do anticipate a launch to live action?
6) New Jersey has an online tax rate of 15%. How much in Delaware?
You don't want to know. It is the same as the tax on the brick and mortar casinos. 55% on slots and 35 % on table games. There is talk about revising this number for online wagering.
7) Who are the software providers?
IGT and 888 are the platform and software providers. This is for the entire state. This would bode well for us if other states have 888 as their provider. Caesars Interactive comes to mind. The WSOP is a brand that would bring liquidity.
8). Nevada has mention compacting with other states as early as 2014. Would that interest you?
I would very interested. Our regulators have had conversation. There is a strong possibility that this could happen in the 1st quarter of 2014. Tom Cook and Governor Markell have been extremely supportive.
9). Is there any anxiety about being the first in the online gaming market to offer a total experience?
None at all. I welcome it.

The target date is October 31. That is if everything goes well. If not, I would rather wait
until we are ready and get it right. We will still be 1st and have a product available
before New Jersey. For now, the free play will be used as a regional marketing tool,
combined with banners offering promotional deals and special offers.
