Mike Perkins - Aspiring Person of the Week

Mike Perkins is a serious player in the film industry. He is a casino supervisor and a film producer in his spare time.
Mike also dabbles in acting.

Mike graduated from Rowan University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio / Television / Film. In 2008, he received an Associate in Arts degree while studying Acting and Film at Camden County College. During his time in college, he also had training in improvisation techniques and sketch comedy with The Second City Training Center. His favorite city is Philadelphia. Mike's dream is to one day make Los Angeles his second home.

He has been an actor, producer, and many other positions throughout his experience within the industry and during college. Most recently, he worked as a producer on the independent feature films Mancation (which is available on DVD and iTunes through Lions Gate Entertainment) and Miss December (originally named Calendar Girl), which has won 5 out of 5 film festival awards since its completion in 2011. Miss December is also available on DVD and iTunes through Kevin Smith’s Movie Club.
Mike's favorite actors are Adam Sandler and Ben Affleck. He would love to work with either of them. The actress that Mike would kill to work with is Mila Kunis.

Just the thought of her brings a smile to his face.

He sat down for a series of questions with me this weekend. I normally shoot seven questions but Mike scored 8.

1). What was the first project that you produced?

My first official project that I produced throughout the entire production was Mancation in 2011. I did produce a film before that in 2010 called Miss December (Originally named Calendar Girl), but that was towards the end of production and received credit as a Producer for promoting the film throughout post-production and up until now. That was when I first met all my friends I work with now and have been with them ever since.

2). Have you done any work in front of the camera?

I did a lot while I was in college at Rowan University, and also other colleges where my friends attended. Since then though, I've really been more behind the scenes producing and just making little cameos here and there in our films. Most recently though I did play a small part as a stock broker in the new Martin Scorsese film coming out, The Wolf of Wall Street, so hopefully I can be seen in there a couple of times.

3). Does being a director require total control, based on your vision of the production?

Being a director, you are in control of the entire artistic vision of the film. You are dealing with the cast, pushing them to deliver their best performances, and also the crew, making sure that what is in your mind emulates onto the screen. However, to pump up what we as the Producers do, we are the ones that make sure that the Director, Cast, and Crew are all on the same page in emulating that vision, being involved in every aspect of the production from start to finish and delivering that final product at its finest.

4). Tell the readers about your latest project?

Our latest project is a documentary called I am Santa Claus. The whole documentary is spanned over an entire year following the lives of six professional Santa Clauses who portray and have dedicated their lives to being Santa Claus all year long. It shows a lot of the heart and real life actuality of how these guys live during the off-season away from the holidays and the struggles they've been through in their lives. We have a huge push from WWE Hall of Famer, Mick Foley. He is one of the Santa's that we follow throughout the film, and most recently he has signed on as a Producer of the film as well, which has taken the documentary to a whole other level. We're in the post-production stage of the film right now, and actually have a Kickstarter account that's still going strong. This is the link for those interested, or to just want to check out the incentives we have for backing the film. I am Santa Claus - Kickstarter

5). What two top directors do you admire and why?

Martin Scorsese has always been a huge influence on me. His films are incredible in all aspects. I hope to one day make a film that has such a great impact on the industry, just like every one of his has done over the years. My other influence is Ben Affleck. He has just recently come over to the other side and started directing movies, but the few he did were amazing. He's always been one of my inspirations in acting and film.

6). What type of film would you call your strong suit? Action, Drama, Comedy, or Documentary.

Hands down, it would be Comedy. My entire life I've always been that funny guy and Comedy has just always been my life. My dream's to one day be the next Adam Sandler on the screen and produce my own films, alongside starring in them, just like the big guy himself. He really is an innovator in that sense, living the dream and making comedy movies with his friends and own production company. Life couldn't get any better than that.

7). When you win your first major award, Oscar, Tony or Emmy, who is the first person you would thank?

Well, the standard is you always have to thank God, but also I'd have to thank my parents. They both have always been so supportive of whatever I do in life and I know that my Mom would probably be crying the entire time on the Red Carpet when I take her there with me.

8). Your impression of James Gandolfini as an actor?  His portrayal of Tony Soprano.

Incredible. He was such a talented actor and had such a wide range that he could always dwell into. You know that you've done something right when you can embody a character in such a deep way, and have an impact on everyone that watched. He turned that character into his own and will always be known in history.

I want to thank Mike for taking time to do this interview.
He is about to blow up!
