How Sports Betting will change televised coverage

Now that Sports Betting is legal, the way televised sportscasts are presented will change dramatically. The subtle references to the point spread by veteran commentators like Al Micheals will still remain.
What will change is pregame coverage. Now the studio hosts can freely weigh in on the trends of the betting public and convey that information. They should not give their opinions as to who they would take with the points. If the coverage include an reknowned tote provider then that individual could give his pick.

We would suggest having a celebrity guest give a pick with the spread. If they pick correctly, a sports book operator makes a donation to the celebrity favorite charity or foundation. The celebrity and the operator would change every week. This would give a unique perspective to the audience and remove the stigma of this guy works for the "house".

We would have Justin Timberlake, Kevin Hart and Bradley Cooper as the first 3 male celebrities making selections. On alternating weeks, invite Nikki Minaj and Ariana Grande. The ratings would go through the roof!

Recap of the PBJ Business of Sports Seminar in Philly

We attended the Philadelphia Business Journal Business of Sports Seminar last month at the Ballroom at the Ben.The major Philadelphia Sports teams participated in this event. They included the Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Phillies and Union.  Each team shared their views about sports betting, media and marketing.
When the question was posed to the audience as to what team would win the next world championship in Philly, the response was split between the Sixers and the Eagles.

The second panel was dedicated to E sports and the evolution of the gamers over the past three years.
While there is still room for improvement in areas concerning language and civility, the E sports  participants on the panel were supportive and pledge to make that a priority. The participants on the E Sports panel were John Fazio of  3RD St Gamers and Mike Prindiville, CEO Team Dignitas.Temple University was represented admirably by Anthony Pizzo, School of Tourism and Hospitality.

Spike Eskin

Two additional panels rounded out the event and they were devoted to Sponsorships/Partnerships & Media. Media was of great interest to the crowd that remain at the event because everyone wanted to know how to reach their audience. Spike Eskin, Program Director; Sports Radio 94 WIP stated "find what people are interested in and share how it feels to them."
We will give our opinion on what we see as the best way to reach your niche. You should utilize all mediums but use most of your resources where they are. You should look for new content and innovation that will bring attention to you. That content should be consistent with your brand or it will not resonate with your current customer. You should also deploy part of your media budget to new market cultivation.

East Coast Gaming Recap Commentary

The takeaways from the #ECGC22 involved Sports Betting, I Gaming and Esports. We will give our overview of each.

Sports Betting is the hot button because everyone wanted it. The framework should be uniform but that would take at least 3 years to put in place. The bottom line is no one makes a ton of money from betting on games. You are only as good as the last bet you take or make. A reasonable tax rate and model will make it appealing and profitable. If rate is too high no one will implement it. So states that have a rate similar to Nevada and New Jersey will do well. Mobile should be part of the package along with in game wagering.

I Gaming is the future of casinos. Everything in the social and wagering for money aspects of casino is trending toward an online experience from the phone to your PC. It works with retail so it will work with gaming. The statistics support it and the profit margins offer a great opportunity to expand your gaming brand.

Esports is the girl or guy in the room that you want to ask out on a date but you don't know how. Operators must find how you can make it work and that by just doing it. Trial and Error will show if this works for your organization or not. The amount of money invested in Esports Teams is an indicator that some wealthy and intelligent people see a future in gamers. There is a faction that is considering have Esports as part of the Olympics within the next decade. So Esports is definitely worth a look.

Sports Betting and Smart Responsible Gaming

We want to share a brief chapter and a video today. In 1992, New Jersey was contemplating Sports Betting. There was a young man that wanted to learn about it but the only place that had classes was in Las Vegas. This man lived in New Jersey and had a job that required him to work 5 days a week. He also had a family. But he thought that this was too good an opportunity to pass up so he register for the class in Vegas and flew across country to take it. He flew back that evening after class.
This was tremendously hard and he decided that after one week he would not go back. But his mother said "just go one more week and then quit if it is too much". So he did. The end of that week he thought about quitting again. His mother said give it one more week. He did. At the end of that week he could not see going back a third time. His mother said "I did not raise a quitter".
He finished the 10 week class in Race and Sports Book Management and met some of the top Sports book operators in the world. Art Manteris, Jimmy Vaccaro, John Avello and Vic Salerno were all instrumental in his development and he acquired knowledge from each of them. They are still prominent figures in the Race and Sports Book Industry.
Now 26 years later, Sports Betting is coming to New Jersey. That young man is quite mature now but ready for an opportunity that had he quit he would not be prepared for. Thanks to his MOM!

Enjoy this video and the journey. Share it and this story with others to encourage them to never give up on your dreams. Honor and remember the people that helped you achieve them.

#ECGC22 is in Atlantic City. June 13 and 14th. If you are attending perhaps we can meet and greet each other formally. The differences in the fonts in this post were done purposely.

NBA and the Legalization of Sports Betting

Adam Silver gave the most definitive statement to date about sports betting in the United States. He proclaim that "Sports Betting will be legal in a couple years." The reason is that it gives another level of engagement for the fans. It will heighten interest in a game that has international appeal and is 2nd in popularity only to NFL Football.  Sports betting would narrow the gap between the two leagues because of the stance Silver is taking.  He is a immensely popular leader and not afraid to take a position that is progressive.

What the league should do next is ask the other commissioners to join him. A unified front will gather public support. The leagues will make more money thru a new revenue stream that be solely based on the use of league trends and statistics. This info can be valuable to patrons that bet on games. A meeting with the AGA Geoff Freeman could start the conversation.

Sports Betting:It's Time

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear New Jersey's case that they be allowed to have sports betting. The timetable to hear the case is this fall with a decision being rendered at the end of the year or the spring of 2018. While it still a long shot that the court will rule in New Jersey's favor, this is the ray of optimism proponents of sports betting desire. The AGA has been extremely influential in letting the legislators in Washington know the ramifications of Sports Betting. A billion dollar industry that currently operates largely in an illegal market. The tax revenue for the states and federal government would be tremendous. The amount of job creation would range in the thousands. The revitalization of the economy in Atlantic City would turn the shore from a 3 month entity to a year round destination.

At least several other states are watching this development closely. They include Pennsylvania.

Nevada would welcome the lifting of the sports betting ban because they could expand their reach into other jurisdictions that would allow the use of a mobile app to wager on games. This could happen if you have an account set up with a casino located in Nevada. The public is already betting on games. The consensus is that this activity is more socially acceptable than recreational marijuana.Cannabis is currently legal in some states and being considered in others.
