Sports Betting and Sports Business

I decided to give the bettors some of the things I look for when I handicap games in Las Vegas, I can't share everything but I'll give you three keys that will increase your profits. My sports betting trifecta.

Key Number One is Don't believe the Hype! If you see a betting service that tells you they are hitting at a 75% rate or higher they are not being real with you. Sports betting is an up and down proposition. Hitting games over a period of a month at a 54 to 58% rate is good.. If you bet regular intervals and practice money management, you can stay alive. Any service that you pay for is merely eating into your bankroll.

Key Number Two is do your homework before you bet. Look at things like trends, sub samples of last 5 to 10 games played and injury reports. If an event take place more than 60% of the time with a sample size of 8 or more it has validity. I tend to go with than against a trend.

Key Number Three is bet what you know. I don't bet preseason or exhibition games. I don't bet XFL games just because I like to bet football. That may change but I want to see more and have more data before I start wagering. Save your money for NBA,NHL and March Madness respectively.

I will end this post with Sports Business information about the ECGC in Atlantic City. This event is not until April but if you act now you can obtain an early bird rate prior to April 3rd. I plan to cover this event but nothing compares to being there. You will get information from the top Gaming CEOs, the view from Wall Street about the gaming industry and how esports will play a role in the casinos.

This Month in Sports Betting and Sports Business

I have changed the time period for this post to include news and information from the G2E 2019. The college world is addressing the sports betting landscape by not allowing students to wager on their school teams. Every school has not adopted this practice but all are looking at what steps should be taken to protect the student athlete. For now, all have held fast to the NCAA standard that was in place prior to the Supreme Court overturning PASPA. This article from the New York Times goes into more detail.

G2E takeaways for me continue to be pushing innovation, provide content and make your operation appeal to your customer. A strong mobile app is imperative. A great social experience that makes being in the sports book comparable to going to a movie. I could wait and see it in my home but that would lack the exciting of seeing the movie in a packed house. Add 5G capability and high definition resolution viewing and you have something worth leaving home for.
Executive Panel includes Gary Bettman Matt King,Greg Carlin and Joe Asher

Partnerships with professional sports teams are ways to heighten brand recognition of the sports business. Casinos know the gaming operations and have the customer base. The teams have the data and the venues. The synergy in the collaboration can be reap tremendous marketing opportunities that go beyond sports betting.

The Nerd Street Gamers have enter into a major agreement with Five Below to bring esports into the retail store chain. The strategy is to have the esports centers in stores near high schools and middle schools. This is the innovation I referred to earlier. Kudos to Wayne Kimmel and John Fazio.

The Bet on Sports America is on my agenda for 2020. It should also be on yours. My latest video that addresses Sports Betting is here.

Sports Wagering and Business This Week

This will keep you current with the industry. These post will include trends about the sports betting market and information about what state is planning to offer it next. This will be a winning situation for a sophisticated operator and his constituents.

Penn National Gaming grabbed the headlines with the announcement of their deal with multiple platform providers for sports betting. They signed agreements with Kambi,DraftKings,PointsBet,The Score and the Stars Group. This is monumental because of the variety that Penn can offer. They can appeal and be competitive with all of the major players with online gaming and sports betting apps.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released numbers for Table Games play for the month of June. There was a significant drop in play from the previous year. If you go to this link, you will see which casinos showed a slight decline. I see the direct correlation with the sports betting product that they have in the brick and mortar property. SugarHouse Casino offered the online experience and did extremely well.

In Washington DC, at least 3 bars are looking at allowing sports betting in their establishments this fall. They include Duffy's Irish Pub, Wet Dog Tavern and The Brig. According to the NBC Washington post by Mark Segraves, each of these venues have submitted applications to the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration to add sports wagering to their liquor licenses. As other businesses express interest, they will be included in this group.

In Denver, N3rd Street Gamers partnered with Kellogg Co. to promote esports. Kellogg's will sponsor an Overwatch video tournament hrough it's Cheez-It Grooves snack product. This event will take place in October. N3rd Street Gamers has a location in Colorado.

Sports and Wagering Business This Week

This will keep you current with the industry. These post will include trends about the sports betting market and information about what state is planning to offer it next. This will be a winning situation for a sophisticated operator and his constituents.

New York approved sports betting and started accepting wagers this week. The sites include Rivers Casino Schenectady and Tioga Downs. Resorts World Catskills and Del Lago will have the capacity to take bets and are expected to announce their plans soon. All wagers must be made in person. There is no mobile sport betting component at this time. They are prohibited from taking bets on New York State collegiate sports teams and any college sports events held within the state.

Washington DC is still finalizing it's sports betting regulations. Once they are complete, expect retailers to apply for Class B licenses that will allow kiosks and sports betting windows in bars and event venues that serve food and alcoholic beverages. Once the application process starts the retailers will be highlighted by name and location. The stipulation in DC is Class B license holder can not be within the proximity of  two blocks from a Class A holder.

New Hampshire legalized sports betting last week, joining Rhode Island as the second state in the New England region to add sports bets to the gaming menu. The residents of New Hampshire can not bet on New Hampshire based teams. They do have a provision for mobile betting.

I can not stress enough that the future of sports betting is in the mobile and tablet side of the business. Unless you have an outstanding venue there is no reason to come place a bet with you that beats the speed of the mobile app. If you are in a jurisdiction where mobile is not an option then innovation is critical to your success.

Recap of the PBJ Business of Sports Seminar in Philly

We attended the Philadelphia Business Journal Business of Sports Seminar last month at the Ballroom at the Ben.The major Philadelphia Sports teams participated in this event. They included the Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Phillies and Union.  Each team shared their views about sports betting, media and marketing.
When the question was posed to the audience as to what team would win the next world championship in Philly, the response was split between the Sixers and the Eagles.

The second panel was dedicated to E sports and the evolution of the gamers over the past three years.
While there is still room for improvement in areas concerning language and civility, the E sports  participants on the panel were supportive and pledge to make that a priority. The participants on the E Sports panel were John Fazio of  3RD St Gamers and Mike Prindiville, CEO Team Dignitas.Temple University was represented admirably by Anthony Pizzo, School of Tourism and Hospitality.

Spike Eskin

Two additional panels rounded out the event and they were devoted to Sponsorships/Partnerships & Media. Media was of great interest to the crowd that remain at the event because everyone wanted to know how to reach their audience. Spike Eskin, Program Director; Sports Radio 94 WIP stated "find what people are interested in and share how it feels to them."
We will give our opinion on what we see as the best way to reach your niche. You should utilize all mediums but use most of your resources where they are. You should look for new content and innovation that will bring attention to you. That content should be consistent with your brand or it will not resonate with your current customer. You should also deploy part of your media budget to new market cultivation.

East Coast Gaming Conference Recap

The #ECGC22 was well timed and the most informative conference that we have attended in the past 5 years. The start of Sports Betting in New Jersey and the opening day of the Congress were coincidentally on the same day. Here are some of the statements that came out of Atlantic City last week.

William Hill CEO Joe Asher said "Sports and Events create a buzz in Las Vegas. New Jersey can't replicate but can do something."

Millenial Esports CEO Alex Igelman said "More money wagered on E sports than on the NHL."

Downtown Grand Las Vegas  CEO Seth Schorr states "Sports Betting is an exciting casino experience. Mobile will subsides things."

New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck said "I Gaming cannibalize the illegal market and created double digit growth revenue for casinos. Sport Betting will drive it higher."

Rush Street Gaming CEO Greg Carlin stated that "Sports Betting is a huge opportunity that should include mobile wagering. Online gaming has added to the Philadelphia brick and mortar property."

Foxwoods Casino CEO Felix Rappaport said "If you don't evolve, you don't survive."

Part Two of the East Coast Gaming Conference recap will post in 4 days. More Photos and commentary about the attendees.

My 400th Post: Q&A with Gaming Guy M

We debated for a long time about doing this one. We would rather give the attention to the trending topics and current events. Writing about people of interest is what excites us and keeps the audience engaged. But over the past 3 months, several people associated with this blog thought that the number 400 is a pretty big deal. So each of them sent submitted questions that would require thought and reflection. So here is our 400th post!

1). What social media platform do you like the best?  Twitter is still our favorite. When a major sporting event is on you can engage a large group of people and share reactions in real time.
LinkedIn is good for post and updates that are business related. We have a large following on both of these. Going forward with Esports ,we will make a more concrete effort to post more on Instagram The followers on that medium tend to be younger and fit the demographic of a gamer.

Rose Cook ,Dan Cortes and yours truly

2) Who was your best interview so far?  So many it is hard to pin down just one. We enjoyed the transparency of  Luisa Woods & Tony Rodio at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City. The latitude given by my former VP of Casino Operations, Rose Cook  with Countdown at the River.  The most thought provoking was how gaming would look in 2025. Other post may have had more readers but those were top three.

3) What post was the most emotional for you to write? The most emotional was not a blog post but a LinkedIn article called Philly Girls Rock. It was written for my former co-worker and colleague, Leigh Whitaker. Leigh is now with the University of Pennsylvania as their Director of City Relations.

3) Who was most influential over the last 4 years of posting? Three people. Cyrus Pitre with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and Jan Jones, Vice President of Government Relations with Caesars Palace. Lastly,Mark Lipparelli , former chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. and current Nevada State Senator. Each of them provided insight about online gaming when many members of the industry thought it was light-years away.

4).What been the biggest accomplishment so far? The development of the Smart Responsible Gaming app. Just having the ability to say we have an app is a pretty big deal. People can read our post every time we blog. The sophistication of having an app and two websites is a sign that we are serious and only beginning.

5) What's Next?  What next is to expand further into Daily Fantasy and Esports.  They are the growth areas that have no boundaries. We have several concepts that we will post about with the target being an increase in content and audience. We are open to discussions and consultations based on compensation.

                                                            Stay Tuned!

Esports in Las Vegas News

Esports is trending in Las Vegas. Two major hotels are dedicating arenas that will feature tournaments and teams exclusively. The hotels are the Luxor and the Downtown Grand. The market has a huge upside and will attract millennials.

Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

We found this video that effectively describes the future of the Esports market. More info and  videos from the #Esports world will be provided in the coming weeks leading up to the #ECGC21 in Atlantic City. The conference will have sessions devoted to Esports. We will cover this event.

Here is a photo of the event from the tournament in Atlantic City last month.

Esports in Las Vegas and Atlantic City

Esports is generating buzz in two of the largest gaming locations in the world. The impact of the gamers is too enormous to ignore. It is new to Las Vegas and Atlantic City. They are embracing the concepts by giving dedicated space to gamers participating in tournaments that are being televised by the Twitch Network.

We attended the Gears of War competition last weekend in Atlantic City. The tournament was held in Caesars Atlantic City Showroom. The top prize was $70,000. Here are some photos of that event.

The NBA has proposed an Esports league that will begin in 2018 and feature NBA2K. This is a brilliant marketing move that will expand the audience. This will result in increases in jersey sales and attendance revenue. The Sixers have already committed to having a team that will represent their brand.

More Esports news in the coming weeks. Members of the gaming industry may want to consider attending the ECGC in Atlantic City. There is sure to be a session that will highlight Esports. We plan to attend and provide coverage of that prestigious event. The dates are May 24 and 25.
